RUNNING BAMBOO
- ARUNDINARIA gigantean CANEBRAKE BAMBOO

This running bamboo is the only North American NATIVE. It was found in waterways in the southeastern U.S. along the Ohio River, with huge stands in Kentucky and selected sites in Ohio.

A running bamboo with a yellow stripe on the light green culms. One of the most reliable and aggressive bamboos for this area. Protect from drying winter winds.

A running bamboo with an upright, dense habit. A very strong plant which holds its leaves better than other bamboos during hard winters.

- PHYLLOSTACHYS nigra BLACK BAMBOO
0 F Grows 15'-20' high 1 1/2"-2" stem diameter
One of the first ornamental bamboos intorduced to the West. A very popular cultivar that is good for sheltered areas. Bright green culms emerge first, turning black within a few years. The culms must be kept from freezing to the ground in severe winters, site in a protected area.

The hardiest of all running bamboos, it has dark green culms. Best all around bamboo for this region.

CLUMPING BAMBOO

Upright habit and clear white sheaths in spring are features which make this plant an interesting selection for a protected, shady spot in the garden.

Faster growing than other Fargesia. A course plant which needs a fair amount of space in a protected, shady location.

GRASSES

- ANDROPOGON gerrardii BIG BLUESTEM
'Lord Snowden' - Graceful, 4' high blue stems with plumes in Jul/Aug. This is a strong, fast growing NATIVE that loves a dry sunny location. A good choice for gardens, meadows and massing.
- ARUNDO donax GIANT REED GRASS   gal. $
A tall, up to 10' high, grass. Resembles stalks of corn. Makes a nice seasonal screen for a sunny location in wet to dry soil.
- 'Golden Chain' - A rare form of Giant Reed Grass, with a beautiful gold color throughout the summer. Grows to 6' in full sun in a wet to dry site. Smaller than species, so it will fit in a tighter location.

- 'Variegata' - White variegation on new growth in the spring. Will grow to be 10' in a sunny, wet to dry site.
- CALAMAGROSTIS x acutiflora FEATHER REED GRASS
'Karl Foerster' - This upright grower, up to 3' high, is a cool season grass. Brown plumes emerge in June. It likes a sunny, dry site, but can take some shade, and does well in clay soil. Very popular for use in a mass planting.
- HAKONECHLOA masca HAKONE GRASS
'All Gold' - Golden yellow foliage mounds and grows 18"-24" high. Spreads slowly, forming a nice ground cover. Prefers some shade in our Ohio climate, and well drained soils.
- 'Aureola' - Gold variegated leaves have pronounced stripes in the shade. A cascading plant with a graceful habit. Will grow 18"-24" high in well drained soil.
- 'Beni-kaze' - This cultivar has similar habits to those above, in addition to turning a beautiful shade of red in the fall. Plant ina shadier area with well drained soil.
- MISCANTHUS sinensis MAIDEN GRASS
'Gracillimus' - This vase shaped grass has narow leaves with a silver vein. Lovely reddish fan shaped plumes come in fall, along with a golden fall color. Likes full sun and well drained to dry soil. Grows 6' tall and looks great as a specimen or in a group.
- PANICUM virgatum SWITCHGRASS
'Northwind' Upright Switchgrass - This is a fast growing, upright NATIVE with blue-green foliage. It loves sun, can take wet to dry soils and will grow to about 5' tall.
- 'Prairie Sky' Blue Switchgrass - This very blue form of Switchgrass grows well in poor soil with little water. Planted in full sun, it will be about 3' in height.
- 'Shenandoah' Red Switchgrass - A beautiful cultivar with tinted red foliage that turns more red in the fall. This is a good sunstitute for Japanese Bloodgrass. Likes full sun and will be about 4' tall.
- PENNISETUM alopecuroides FOUNTAIN GRASS
'Red Head' - Foliage is in a rounded, arching habit, with reddish bottlebrush plumes in summer. Looks best planted in masses and likes a sunny, moist site. Will grow to be 3' tall.
- SCHIZACHYRIUM scoparium LITTLE BLUESTEM
'Prairie Blues' - An excellent NATIVE choice for sustainable landscapes, areas with poor soil, little moisture and full sun. Great lasting blue-grey foliage, this is a seed selection of the native Little Bluestem. Will grow to about 18" high.
- SORGHASTRUM nutans BLUE INDIAN GRASS
'Indian Steel' - An attractive NATIVE cultivar with stell blue foliage that has hints of light green, then turns to bronze in the fall. Anotehr excellent choice for sustainable landscapes and naturalized areas. Loves full sun and doesn't mind dry or poor soils. It will grow to be 2'-3' high.
