Five Springs Farm Nursery and Landscaping, located in Athens, Ohio, is a full service design and build landscape company. Locally owned and operated by a second generation landscape designer and nursery owner, with over 25 years of experience in the Green Industry. Working with nature, FSF integrates horticulture and design to create distinctive residential and commercial landscapes. From intimate spaces to master plans, form and function meld to create a unique landscape plan. Landscaping is a collaborative process in which nature encourages, the customer informs and FSF envision, creating a unique, green design layered in color, scent and structure, offering beauty and value as it grows over the years.
Green is very popular these days. It is a color, a life style choice, an industry unto itself. Five Springs Farm has been attempting to be green for many years. It was not a concious choice, but more of a habit, with landscapes that focus on native plants, natural and found materials, are low maintenance and critter friendly. We grow a diverse selection of plant material without the overuse of pesticides and herbicides. These are loose guidelines which we use in our business and everyday lives, not an ideology which we use to dictate to or impose on others.
Five Springs Farm Nursery and Landscaping is a local company where the owners and employees live in the Athens area. We spend money on local goods and services: at the Athens Farmer's Market, with mechanics and insurance agents, internet providers, banks, hardware stores, restaurants and even local taverns. FSF participates in local events, such as the annual Pawpaw Festival, and sponsors youth sports teams. FSF purchases landscape material and services from local companies such as White's Mill, Slaters, Cochran Sand and Gravel, C&E Hardware, Bedrock, various excavators and a local sawmill. What this means is that the relationship between FSF and our customers does not end when the job is finished. When you purchase plant material from FSF or hire us to do a landscape project, the result is a true GREEN economic reverberation - echoing throughout the local economy.
Sustainability is often mentioned as a component of a green life style. It can be represented by the purchase of goods and services which promote the environment, the local economy and the livelihood and well being of those who provide the goods and services. FSF has always worked with the possibilities of the site and the expectations of the customer to create long lived landscape projects. We use a wide variety of native materials in these projects. In a perfect world, we would grow all of the plant material we use in our designs and sell at the nursery. Economics, time and a tentative grip on sanity dictate that this will not work. FSF does grow some of its own plant material, other material is brought in and grown on over time. Finally, some finished material is brought in for on time sales. Sustainability is the thread which holds all of this together. All of the growers we purchase from are family owned businesses, many are second and third generation. A large percentage of these companies are
located in Ohio. Business owners who answer their own phones and know you by name. These small business owners grow plants they love and live a life style they cherish, preserving the legacy left by their parents and grandparents. FSF purchases plant material to sustain this tradition, not to mention the superior quality and health of the material when compared to large, corporate owned nurseries. When our generous customers purchase material from FSF, they are promoting, enriching and sustaining this green tradition.
